Artist Statement

Llanthony is the spiritual heart of the Brecon Beacons National park. Nestled in the eastern corner of the park aptly named ‘The Black Mountains’.

The Llanthony valley has for many centuries been a place that many have felt a spiritual connection too. Littered with lay lines from pilgrims of the past who have left their mark on the landscape in the form of crooked churches, monasteries and an impressive ruin known as Llanthony Priory.

I myself always feel a peaceful spiritual connection here and it is a place i’m often drawn to as the valley matures into Autumn before gradually fading into Winter. The ancient deciduous woodlands show their true colours with every shade of copper, red, brown and yellow before laying a carpet to welcome the snow.

The view from the Abbey is the inspiration behind the cloth. Crowning the top of the valley you will find a hill alight with the copper tones of Bracken leading down into the reds and greens of the ever changing woodland before finishing amidst the Priory ruins.
